A second Game of Thrones prequel series is reportedly in the works at HBO, according to Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter. Both outlets are reporting that the new series is close to a pilot order. Written by Colony co-creator Ryan Condal and produced by Condal and A Song of Ice and Fire author George R. R. Martin, the potential prequel is based on Martin’s Fire and Blood, a history of the Targaryen dynasty. Set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series would reportedly focus on the dominance and decline of House Targaryen.

If this all sounds familiar, it’s because Martin has been hinting at a Fire and Blood series for some time – ever since it was announced that HBO was developing a number of prequel or companion series for Game of Thrones back in 2017. According to Deadline, this is not a sixth spinoff that is separate from the five previously announced projects, but “a brand new take on a world originally tackled by Bryan Cogman… Former GoT co-executive producer Cogman confirmed in April that his prequel idea was not going forward.”

Basically, it sounds as if Condal will be attempting a new adaptation of Fire and Blood separate from Cogman’s take on the material, resulting in a new version.
