ANTHONY, N.M. – An Anthony man was arrested early Tuesday morning, and charged with one count of attempted murder, a capital crime, after he allegedly physically assaulted his wife.
At 6:15 p.m. Monday, Heriberto Vasquez-Gutierrez called Doña Ana County Sheriff’s detectives to the 3000 block of Opitz Drive in Anthony, saying his wife had fallen.
When first responders arrived, they realized the woman’s injuries were not consistent with a fall.
Court documents detail a disturbing incident in which Vasquez-Gutierrez beat his ex-wife after argument that stated over a dirty microwave. Vasquez-Gutierrez allegedly threw his ex-wife into a wall, stabbed her multiple times and tried to commit suicide, waiting hours before actually calling police.
“My husband did this.” That’s what an Anthony, N.M. woman allegedly told American Medical Response Paramedic Vanessa Villa, who responded to a 911 call Monday night in the 3000 block of Opitz Road, according to court records.
The documents state the woman was flown to University Medical Center in El Paso for treatment with blunt force trauma to the head and multiple lacerations to her arms, hands and abdomen. The woman required a blood transfusion upon arrival, according to the documents.

According to court documents, Villa was called to the residence just after 6 p.m. Monday. When the paramedic walked into the home, she found a large amount of blood in the doorway, hallway, living room and kitchen floor.
Then she saw her patient — a woman, lying on the kitchen floor and covered in blood. The woman had a deep laceration to her neck, stab wounds all over her body, and the back of her head was “really soft,” court documents state.
A knife and a hammer, covered in blood, were on the kitchen table.
As Villa tended to the woman’s injuries, court documents state she asked Gutierrez-Vasquez, if he’d hit his wife, and he allegedly told her yes. She then asked if he’d tried to slit her throat, and he allegedly said yes.
Gutierrez-Vasquez then allegedly told Villa that he pushed the woman into the wall, and the impact was so forceful that the sheetrock broke.
A fight over soup
After waiving his Miranda rights, Gutierrez-Vasquez allegedly told deputies that he and the woman had been divorced for six or seven years, but that he sometimes lives with her because he doesn’t have a place to stay.
Court documents state the morning of the fight, Gutierrez-Vasquez went to heat menudo in the microwave and noticed the appliance was dirty. Later in the morning, the woman allegedly went to use the microwave and began calling him names because it was dirty.
That’s when Gutierrez-Vasquez shoved her into the wall, breaking the sheetrock, court documents state.
He then allegedly told deputies he got a knife and used it to harm the woman, retrieved a hammer from the living room and beat her with it as she lay on the floor.
He didn’t remember
During the investigation, court documents state Gutierrez-Vasquez told deputies he knew he’d injured the woman, but didn’t remember how. He attempted to call 911 for help but didn’t know how to use the phone.
After the incident, he allegedly attempted suicide by taking medication, but the medication only made him drowsy — so he took a shower, and then a nap, police records allege.
When Gutierrez-Vasquez woke up, court documents state he saw the woman on the floor, realized what he’d done, and thought that he would kill himself by hanging. But he changed his mind and, instead, called 911 for help.
Vasquez-Gutierrez was transported to the Doña Ana County Detention Center where he is being held without bond on one count of attempted murder.
